W-4 Form

Definition

The Employee's Withholding Certificate you fill out when starting a new job (or anytime you want to adjust withholding). It tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from each paycheck. The current W-4 (redesigned in 2020) uses a five-step process instead of the old allowance system.

Example

After getting married, you should update your W-4 to reflect married filing jointly status, which typically reduces the amount withheld from each paycheck.
